Adulting + What to Do At Your New Apartment Right Away

We just moved again, (third time for both of us in the past year) and we feel like we have down what to do the first two to six hours when you move into a new apartment.

The steps are relatively simple, and can make a world of difference in making your new apartment or house your new home!

Move into a New Apartment

4 Things When You Move Into A New Apartment

1. Take Photos of Everything

As soon as you arrive, pull out your phone and take photos of what every appliance looks like when you move in. Take photos of what windows look like, the walls, and the bathroom. It’s great to have your own documentation, even if you walk through the apartment with a building or property manager.

We almost had to pay for a brand new stove because an inexperienced building manager didn’t note a scratched ceramic stove. Be able to stand up for yourself and document what’s wrong when you move in.

2. Wipe Down Everything

No matter how great a cleaning job anyone did, wipe down your walls, countertops, toilet, cupboards, and drawers with disinfectant. Don’t forget your baseboards and the top of your doors, just run a wet paper towel or cloth around them.

It’ll make you feel better that this mess is yours and not anyone else!

3. Set Up Your Bedroom and Make Your Bed

Even if you move in your bedroom stuff in the morning, as long as you put together your bed (and have it ready for that night) you’ll feel much better. It’s so easy to forget about it in the midst of moving, but honestly it’s so nice to get into a freshly made bed at the end of the night!

4. Put Boxes in Their Respective Rooms

Even if you can’t unpack them, sort boxes into their perspective rooms (as least in a pile together) so that it’s easy to have everything you need when you start unpacking that room. If you’re a visual organizer  (like me) than you’ll be able to unpack everything because it’ll be where you want it to go!

These are our tips for moving in, Matt also loves to go around to try to figure out what switches do what, I like to take at least six months for me to figure it out 😉

When we moved from one house to another (2 adults, 3 kids), every box had a colored square taped to it. Each room had a color and we had a few signs made up with each color and its destination. It made a huge difference.

We, by which I mean my wife, made up a tote of things for the first days. Having easy access to TP, paper towel, wipes, paper plates, plastic silverware, etc. was a lot better than having to dive through boxes searching for things.
