Yesterday Matt and I celebrated four years of officially dating, I can’t believe it’s been that long/hasn’t been longer. The people that started dating four years ago aren’t the people we are today, but in my opinion that’s the best kind of relationship where you’re able to grow with each other.
Since I was writing our story for our wedding website, I thought I would post it here! It’s long, because we’ve known each other for nine years.
Embarrassing photos ahead (Sorry not that sorry Matt, he doesn’t really read my blog any way!)
I first saw Matt the first day of freshman year at East High School. We had Honors Global Studies and Honors English 9 together, and just happened to be seated facing each other for both. We didn’t talk, but I noticed the shy guy who “looked” at me a lot.
Winter formal 2009 (so awkward)
The first time we actually talked was at the first debate meeting of the year. I was there with a middle school friend and Matt was there with a friend of his from middle school as well. I think we chatted a little? But it wasn’t until our two best friends from middle school started dating that we really talked. We both went to a Friday night football game where I was in prime embarrassing form. Matt bought me a soda after I attempted to put two dollar bills in the soda machine at once. We started dating the following Monday, and he kissed me for the first time at homecoming. We dated for the majority of freshman year, breaking up at the beginning of May 2009.
During the time I “hated” Matt
As Matt likes me to note, I “hated” him for the majority of our sophomore year, despite being in Model UN, debate and Mock Congress together. That year I started dating someone else, and junior year Matt and I became friends. Our senior year we grew closer, and in my opinion the real spark that was missing the first time we dated appeared. I broke up with my high school sweetheart immediately after graduation which was very bad timing. I still remember Matt being one of the first of my friends to show up at my graduation party early, hours after my break-up and spent the day making sure I didn’t get asked a million questions about it.
The day of my graduation party!
While in Europe with my parents, our family friends from Germany joined us in Italy. Out of the blue one day eating, my mom said that I could most likely visit them in Germany over my spring break. After getting home from our vacation, I asked a handful of my high school friends when their spring breaks were, coincidentally, Matt’s was the only one who had the same break as I did.
Since Matt had never been to Europe before, and it was a really cheap trip (we only needed plane tickets and spending money) we both decided that he should come with me. We booked our tickets (I think) before we left for our freshman year of college. He was going to Des Moines, Iowa and I was headed to Green Bay, Wisconsin.
To make sure that our spring break trip was incredibly awkward, we would try and talk periodically. Soon he had my class schedule memorized and would call me in between classes to talk. We went home for fall break, and our debate coach Mrs. Doris Sexton asked “So when are you and Beine going to get together” (or something like that). We both denied liking each other, (that was a lie) and went back to school.
Our first photo dating when we went to Chicago with some friends!
Thanksgiving break rolled around, and we went to see Lincoln with our usual partner-in-crime Aaron. The theater was freezing, and as I’m usually cold I commandeered Matt’s jacket to use as a blanket, and sat as close as I could to him. He put his hand over mine and all of a sudden I was very warm (and red). After the movie we just had to get half-apps at Applebee’s, and my girlfriends made a very big deal of us sharing an appetizer. Not one for being subtle, I texted him at the end of the night confirming that I liked him and looking for confirmation that he liked me too.
He replied that yes, he liked me too. We went back to school, and he was kind enough to pick me up from Green Bay for winter break. I walked him around campus, hoping he’d ask me out. (Katie, my maid of honor, was adamant he would not) Within the next couple of days we had a Christmas party with our friends where he stayed late and kissed me. We also went to mall, and back to Applebee’s with our friends. It was at Applebee’s I remember telling my friend that I was about to ask him out (patience is not my strong suit). Then, that night at 1:00 am with me half-asleep in his car dropping me off at my house, Matt asked me to be his girlfriend. I said yes, and I guess you can say the rest is history.
Our engagement photos from this past August
Holy cow have we grown up! After three and a half years of long distance and a cross-country move it’s safe to say I’ve found my life partner. Not to get too sappy, but I can’t wait to marry this man in October 2017!
Do you have any posts on your love story? Any odd meetings or encounters? I love reading these kind of stories!
